兹为《星报》分会支持Helmi Md. Foad的公开信：
Dear NUJ members
We in the NUJ-Star branch would like to express our support for Helmi Md. Foad in the upcoming contest for the post of NUJ President. We feel that the time has come for a change. The NUJ leadership needs to be progressive and reformist and take a pro-active role in pushing for press freedom and the repealing of the Official Secrets Act and the Printing Presses Act. It is our fervent hope that Helmi will be given the chance to lead our organization in what is clearly a transitional period for our nation as a whole.
Our incumbent president Norila Daud has served on the NUJ Executive Committee for more than 25 years including 18 years as its President. As a body with over 1,000 members the NUJ has not achieved its full potential as a force for social change and activism. While her commitment to the union is not in question, we feel there is an inherent danger in the sort of career unionism that has been practiced during Norila’s time, leading to complacency and inaction on the union’s part.
Journalists look to the NUJ for leadership and there have been times when we have been found wanting. Helmi, whose tenure as NUJ-Utusan chairman was ended due to a technically has shown his desire to lead our struggle for better working conditions and greater press freedom.
